hematology

The Hematology Department performs a variety of tests on blood, urine, bone marrow, and sterile body fluids that allow physicians to diagnose and monitor anemia, leukemia, lymphoma, malignancy, infection and many other abnormalities and diseases.

Testing is performed by ASCP certified medical technologists and technicians with many years of experience in high complexity testing under the direction of hematopathologist, Alexandra Harrington, MD, MT(ASCP).

We are a full service, high volume laboratory testing over 400,000 blood samples per year for complete blood counts alone. Our laboratory utilizes state-of-the-art instrumentation using the gold standard Fluorescence Flow Cytometry technology. This technology assists laboratory personnel in efficient and highly accurate analysis of patient samples.  High quality results are reported timely, giving providers the tools needed to manage their patients.

Our laboratory also assists in performing over 1,500 bone marrow biopsies each year, a number that is steadily increasing. This service is essential for diagnosing, staging, and monitoring hematological disorders and malignant processes. Slides are prepared at the patient’s bedside, stained in the laboratory, reviewed by medical technologists and submitted to pathology for interpretation.

High quality laboratory data is critical in helping physicians make accurate clinical judgments. Our laboratory specialists pride themselves in providing the highest quality results in an expedient manner.
